Profoto Sweden Interview

Profoto is a major driving force in the manufacturer of professional lighting systems aimed at the professional photographer and today they released an interview that they recently held with Ambient Life photographer Tim Wallace.

Tim talked openly about his approach to his work and lighting and also the interview contains a breakdown of the lighting that Tim recently demonstrated whilst on a shoot in the US with a Mustang muscle car, recorded for Kelby training as part of a series of four training videos that have now been launched globally and continue to receive strong positive feedback for their open approach and step by step technique.

Profoto was founded in 1968, in Stockholm, by photographer and engineer Eckhard Heine and photo equipment retailer Conny Dufgran, both Swedish. Their relationship started out with mr Dufgran selling mr Heine a new flash unit – that didn’t work. Annoyed with the failing unit, mr Heine went home and invented a new type of flash, with the focus on durability. Simply by walking around in Stockholm for two weeks, he immediately sold 25 units. Profoto was born – with a bang – and a few months later Eckhard Heine and Conny Dufgran launched the new Pro-1 generator internationally at the Photokina trade show in Cologne.

Aston Martin DBS Shoot

The Aston Martin DBS is the favourite of many for its aggressive good looks and its powerful presence on the road and this week car photographer Tim Wallace got to grips with the DBS for a marketing shoot for our UK Aston client.

The car was made famous by James Bond in last year’s Casino Royale, with the DBS is a race-bred road car based on the DB9 and Le Mans class-winning DBRS9. Using a tweaked version of the six-litre V12 engine from the outgoing Vanquish S, the DBS produces a titanic 510bhp and 420lb/ft of pulling power.
Engineers have tuned the engine to give it a bit more oomph above 5,500rpm – making it the fastest accelerating Aston ever.
The DBS rockets from 0-62mph (100kph) in 4.3 seconds and 0-100mph in 9.4 seconds before running out of steam at 191mph.
Weight has been cut by 120kg, by fitting lighter seats, lighter brakes and carbon fibre panels.
The DBS’s handling is more responsive than on the brilliant DB9, with an adaptive suspension varying the level of stiffness according to the road conditions. On the outside, the DBS – which rolls on sexy 20-inch wheels – has a sculpted, muscular bodykit reflecting the DBRS9 with more air intakes than on the DB9 to increase airflow into the engine.

Scott Kelby gets Inspired…

Scott Kelby is the founder of Kelby Training based in the US and is well respected throughout the photographic industry for his training and seminars as well as his work within the Adobe and Photoshop communities. Tim recently spent some time in the US recording 4 training videos with the Kelby Training team and these have been very popular both in the US and internationally. The Wallace Classes Available on Kelby

The four classes that are online with Kelby Training from AmbientLife are;

1. How to light a car using multiple lights
2. Lighting a car and shooting detail with just one light
3. Shooting cars with only available light
4. Photoshop techniques for Car Photographers.

All of the filming took place in Ybor near Tampa Florida at a location known as ‘The Trolley Barn’, a location made famous in its use during the filming of ‘The Punisher’ a few years ago. October in Florida is still pretty hot and during our first week the weather was indeed very humid with the whole team really feeling that heat inside the barn. Our choice of cars over the term of the shooting was a Ford Mustang V6, a Dodge Challenger, and a Cadillac CTS.

If you would like to watch how we worked with these cars and made the best use of our lighting then please join us online at Kelby Training where you can review and enjoy all 4 video classes, each of which is around 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration.

Exclusive talk announced with Royal Photographic Society

The Royal Photographic Society announced this week some of their 2012 social events and we are pleased to announce that on the 18th August there will be a special one off event with Tim Wallace where he will be talking about his work and through some of the issues surrounding working in the field of commercial photography today.

Tim’s talks take a rare insight into the world of commercial photography through the eyes of a professional working in this environment both nationally and internationally, and offer people the chance to gain further knowledge in what it takes to become a success in a career that is notorious for its high failure rate.

Tim will be discussing many aspects of photography including work-flow and how he approaches it for maximum efficiency, equipment in respect of DSLR Vs Medium format as well as lighting and just how he feels that shooting styles have changed over the last 10 years. He also openly speaks about the industry and personally talks through some of his own work, explaining his thought process and how he approaches a shoot and well as his own experiences of how to first approached the commercial market as a new comer. Finally we look at digital as a whole, some techniques Tim uses in Photoshop that he designed as well as looking at the importance of a fluid professional work-flow, discussing if it is still a ‘pure’ medium and how to regain that ‘shooting on film’ feeling that many professionals feel has been lost.
