Kelby in the US this week launched the 4th and final video in the series of films that car photographer Tim Wallace created in the US with them recently. This forth video looks in depth at the post production side of car photography and takes an image from class number 3 where Tim worked in nothing more than available light and looks at how we can adjust and improve that image to really bring it to life and add some drama and impact. Tim also looks at some further techniques and talks through how he not only approaches his post production work but also points out a few things along the way that photographers should be thinking about regarding their work all the way back to the point that they are taking the image with the final edit in mind.
All the classes have been receiving excellent feedback as photographers and keen amateurs around the World follow the series on Kelby Training.

The Wallace Classes Available on Kelby
The four classes that are online with Kelby Training from AmbientLife are;
1. How to light a car using multiple lights
2. Lighting a car and shooting detail with just one light
3. Shooting cars with only available light
4. Photoshop techniques for Car Photographers.
Behind the scenes during the US filming
All of the filming took place in Ybor near Tampa Florida at a location known as ‘The Trolley Barn’, a location made famous in its use during the filming of ‘The Punisher’ a few years ago. October in Florida is still pretty hot and during our first week the weather was indeed very humid with the whole team really feeling that heat inside the barn. Our choice of cars over the term of the shooting was a Ford Mustang V6, a Dodge Challenger, and a Cadillac CTS.
If you would like to watch how we worked with these cars and made the best use of our lighting then please join us online at Kelby Training where you can review and enjoy all 4 video classes, each of which is around 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration.

The class features photographer Tim Wallace as he demonstrates how to both approach and work with shooting car using nothing more than one camera, one lens and just making use of the available light around us inside a warehouse setting in Tampa Florida. The class has received great reviews already and is the 3rd of 4 that will be presented by Kelby over the coming months with the first class already starting to receive rave reviews all over the Internet communities.
Just some of the feedback being received in the first day from relaese
Renier Welgemoed – Austrailia
“Hi Tim,
I love your classes on Kelby Training and your work on your web site, you make it look so easy, but I guess with lots of practice everything gets a little bit easier.”
T. Quinn – US
“My word…another winner Mr. Wallace. Minimal equipment with maximum output. For the car nut like me this is so great to learn and think about seeing in the camera rather than in Photoshop. With that being said, cannot wait for the 4th class on photoshop to see what you can do”
M. Azzahrani – Dubai
“Dear Lord! This guy is TOO good. I took photos with my dusty old “Suzuki Swift” following these instructors with only one soft box and it turned out amazing, mean and monster looking ride!”
J. Mold – US
“I just wanted to say that I have been following Tim’s awesome work for sometime. I’m trying to break into commercial photography and couldn’t believe my luck when I saw that Tim was featuring as one of your pro instructors. The timing couldn’t have been better as I have a commercial shoot for a luxury car dealership in a few weeks. I am fairly comfortable with off camera lighting, but Tim’s attention to detail, the way he teaches and makes you feel like you’re having a 1-2-1 session on location with him s fantastic. I’ve learnt so much from this series that I know I’ll be taking my vehicle photography to the next level. I have learnt so much from the first 3 courses he has done that I really look forward to seeing more of him on Kelby Training.”
W. Jones – England
“To the folks at Kelby Training and Tim Wallace, thanks so much! I have enjoyed and learned so much from Tim’s series so far. I am a car enthusiast and have always wanted to learn how to improve my photographs of cars. This course has helped significantly.
Tim thanks so much for taking the time, I really enjoy your approach to photography and find your creativity very inspirational! Keep it up.”
J. Santiago – Spain
“Wallace did it again!!!! His simple approach yet powerful results just amazes me. What I liked best was the simple setup and equipment to obtain quality results. Really like it…”

Over the last few months the Kelby Group have been releasing two of the four video classes that commercial car photographer Tim Wallace recorded in the US recently. The video classes have been receiving some great reviews and are currently among the most watched class on the Kelby Worldwide Group. This week even saw the president of NAPP Scott Kelby get inspired himself to get out there with his own camera and try some of the techniques for himself…
A selection of some of the reviews and comment from Kelby Training
“I found Tim on the Internet a few years back and i’ve liked his style ever since. He has a great eye, and he lights the cars in both a very pleasing and interesting way.
I work as a automotive photographer as well and i sometimes find inspiration from Tim’s work since i like his style.”
“Watched the car one already and loved it. Vital information for me as I try to move into this segment. I am sure the close up video is as good and I can’t wait to watch”
“Thanks Scott for giving us the opportunity to further feed on Tim incredible talent, his images are terrific!!”
“Outstanding classes from Tim! I am the least ‘car guy’ there could possibly be (possibly because I do body repairs on them every day?) and I soooo want to get my gear out and do this! I’m hoping to give it a shot this week some time. Not like I have a lack of subjects in the shop…..
“
“Tim Wallace is great… I have watched both of his classes 3 times each and catch something new each time… thank you guys so much for having him teach these classes… One of my co-workers just bought a top of the line Z06 Corvette and agreed to let me shot the car as practice… maybe I will post the pics to the next Grid Critique.
Thanks again!!!”
“Wow, Tim Wallace is awesome. It struck me that he has the finished photo already in his head, that is creative thinking I don’t have. HA, still using film camera sound for his high end digital. Great stuff!”
“Both classes are terrific. Even if you don’t like to shoot cars, you’ll get something out of these classes. Great job, Tim!”

The long awaited new release from Nikon, the D4 was on show this week in Denmark where commercial car photographer Tim Wallace was putting the new D4 through its paces as part of an exciting launch event at the newly designed Audi Centre in Fredericia, Denmark. Tim was invited over to Denmark by Nikon Europe to both test the new D4 and look at what the new body is capable of as part of a ‘live shoot’ demonstration using three very different lighting setups on stage at the Audi Centre. The event was hugely popular and attracted over 160 guests in total coming from all over the Nordic regions as well as from within Denmark.
The day was introduced by Nikon who gave a short presentation covering some of the new features on the D4 and then Photographer Tim Wallace took the stage for a 2 hour talk through what inspires him to create the work that has catapulted him forward to be one of the most recognised car photographers in Europe today in just the last 4 years. After lunch Tim demonstrated and talked through each of the individual lighting setups before inviting all those attending to try some shots out for themselves whilst he was on hand to assist those shooting. Later to round up the day Tim was back on stage and gave a question and answer session regarding his approach, his outlook and his drive within the commercial industry.
The event was a huge success and it is planned that Tim will be doing further events with Nikon Europe in the future so watch this space…
Aleksandar Mastilo – Copenhagen – “i just wanted to thank you for the great workshop the other day here in Denmark, it was both funny ( love British humour ) and very inspirational. enjoyed very much to see your work and how you work and I really enjoyed to see your passion for what you do…
I will specially thank you for your willingness to share your knowledge end experience. not many that are on the top would do it. it was also very humble of you to say that you were lucky and that you feel you need to give something back. it was not photo-related ( and i am not sure if many really paid attention to that ), but for me it was great stuff to hear and see you do that. kudos for that!

A new media presentation of the work of automotive commercial car photographer Tim Wallace was made live today. The ‘burst’ media presentation shows just some of the work that we have produced in recent months and demonstrates a cross section of skills within the field of professional commercial photography.
Ford Mustang Shoot – US
The Ford Mustang has for many years been the hero of the American US motor industry, a car that has survived the test of time and today remains as infamous as it always has been. Photographer Tim Wallace was in the US recently shooting the V6 Mustang, the modern day leader in this all American brand.

The Ford Mustang is an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. It was initially based on the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. Introduced early on April 17, 1964, dubbed as a “1964½” model by Mustang fans, the 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A. The model is Ford’s third oldest nameplate in production and has undergone several transformations to its current fifth generation.
Ford introduced a redesigned 2005 model year Mustang at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, codenamed “S-197,” that was based on the new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and exterior styling designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang’s styling echoes the shineback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford’s senior vice president of design, J Mays, called it “retro-futurism.” The fifth-generation Mustang is manufactured at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
DLSR Magazine Malaysia publish a 10 page feature on the work of automotive car and commercial photographer Tim Wallace this week. The magazine interviewed Tim for their ‘Pro’ feature and talked with him about his background, his drive, how he approaches his work today as recognised force in the commercial photography industry and just what the story is behind some of his strong views within the industry.
The Jaguar Heritage Centre in Coventry was the location this week for the 2011 Jaguar Pro Live Shoot Master Class with photographer Tim Wallace. The event was aimed at Professional photographers and gave them an opportunity to watch Tim at work shooting these classic Jaguars using lighting as well as demonstrating some techniques and talking through the path from creative idea to capture.
The work that Tim produces within the car industry is often seen at inspirational and unique in its style and this led to Tim being the proud recipient this year of two major awards, Professional Commercial Photographer of the Year and most significantly also UK Car Manufacturer Photographer of the Year. Many people assume or believe that a great deal of the work that Tim presents has had a great deal of post production work done after capture however Tim is a very firm believer that photography is very much a skill and that a huge amount of creativity can be achieved with the right skill level in camera, something that Tim talks a lot about in interviews and also in his classroom based seminars. The photographers attending this Pro Live Shoot were able to witness the capture first approach that Tim takes to his work and then Tim performed various lighting setups to demonstrate the very high level of work that can be completed ‘in camera’ before post edit is required.
Tim - “It’s always great to do these live shoot seminars and in truth I get a huge amount of satisfaction from being able to demonstrate that photography is indeed very much still a skill and in my view one that we are allowing to die slightly as we increasingly become reliant on photoshop and post edit techniques to actually ‘create’ our work for us or rescue us from a bad shoot or technique. We had quite a few ‘eureka’ moments from the photographers attending and that’s always great to see and I look forward to keeping in touch with the friends that we made that day and seeing how they progress.
I would also like to thank Jaguar for allowing me the use of the facility for the event and most especially Karam Ram from Jaguar for all his support and assistance in arranging this event and making sure that all the pieces were in place. Peter Hodgson from Calumet for his unwavering support through the various seminars and talks that we have each year with Calumet and also the excellent background support and assistance on the day from the vendors such as Epson and Profoto who fully support each event that we undertake, a big thanks guys, it was very definitely a great seminar”
