Q1 New Pro Book Launch

The ‘Pro Book’ represents a online copy of our automotive car photography work presented on screen as a portfolio but more in the traditional sense, a soft copy you could say of the actual Pro Book that we may use in client meetings or with agents. The book is updated four times each year and we are very pleased to announce the launch of the Q1 2013 version of the book is now live.

Tim’s Pro Book for his automotive car photography receives a vast amount of interest from clients and agencies alike and we hope that this new release of Tim’s Portfolio inspires and demonstrates his create style and approach as well as showcasing some of his recent work both in the UK and Internationally.

500px this week launched a news page regarding the craft of car photography and named in their view the Worlds top ten car photographers to follow. We are very pleased indeed and somewhat humbled to have been placed at the top of that list.

Dodge Challenger Shoot – US

Recently AmbientLife was over in the US recording and shooting some client work and whilst we were there we did some test work for a automotive company based in Clearwater near Tampa Florida.
Our task was to create a hard hitting image of a new the new Dodge Challenger.
The Challenger is a muscle coupe with a mix of retro style and modern performance. Designed to tie together the past and present, the Challenger competes with its classic rivals, the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro.

Although the Challenger was on hiatus for three decades, it was a muscle car from the start. The Challenger has remained true to its roots, its two generations spanning a three-decade hiatus yet still looking, driving and performing closely enough to recognize it at the same model. It has always been a great car to shoot photographically and we look forward to spending possibly more time with Dodge in the future to shoot this true American icon of motoring.

The Challenger started production in 1970 and has only seen two generations of production due to a 30-year hiatus from 1978 to 2008. The original offered four hardtop models: Challenger Six, V8, T/A, and R/T. A convertible was offered in 1970 and 1971 only. Engines ranged from a 225 cubic-inch six to a 230-horsepower, 318 cubic-inch V-8, a 340 cubic-inch V-8 and the 290-horsepower 383-cubic-inch V-8. All models came standard with a three-speed manual transmission except for the 383 cubic-inch V-8, which was only available with a TorqueFlite automatic.

The R/T featured a 383 cubic-inch Magnum V-8, rated for 335 horsepower initially, but later 300 horsepower. The R/T could also be upgraded to a 440 cubic-inch Magnum, a 440 cubic-inch Six-Pack and a 426 cubic-inch Hemi. The first generation of the Challenger ran from 1970 to 1978.

The current generation of the Challenger was reintroduced in 2008, with a simplified lineup and engine range: the SE, a base V-6 model with 250 horsepower; the R/T, with a 5.7-liter HEMI rated at 375 horsepower; and the SRT8, with a 6.1-liter HEMI rated at 425 horsepower. This new range was styled to look much like the classic Challenger, though it has grown considerably in size, weighing over 4,000 pounds and featuring 17 to 20-inch alloy wheels. Nevertheless, it provides classic muscle-car feel and performance, with an available five-speed automatic or pistol-grip six-speed manual (manual available on R/T and SRT8 only).

Profoto Magazine Germany – News and Features with Tim Wallace

This month the work of commercial car and automotive photographer Tim Wallace was featured in the German Profoto News Magazine. The magazine features each quarter a cross section of work from cutting edge professional photographers from around the world and we were very proud to have Tim’s work showcased in the magazine as well as being held across the front page of the Spring edition of the magazine. In the feature Tim talks about his work, his views and his lighting within his role as one of the top commercial car photographers in Europe today.

Tim Wallace shoots cars. That is the short explanation. But it is somewhat misleading because looking at Tim’s images you get the feeling that he not only shoots what is in front of the camera, but also what is hidden underneath the body of the car – its heart and soul.

“For me it’s all about creating an emotional image,” says Tim. “I mainly work in the prestige end of the car market, and such brands as Bentley, Jaguar and Aston Martin aren’t sold with reason but with passion and emotion.”

But as we all know, cars are not actually emotional. They are lifeless objects made of plastic and aluminum. So, how do you capture the passion and emotion in something like that?

“First of all, I spend very little time in the studio,” says Tim. “Personally, I don’t believe cars belong there. They belong on the road. That’s where they come alive.

“It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to shoot the entire car to show its personality. Sometimes shooting just a tiny detail is enough, like the rear light on an Aston Martin DB5 or just a fraction of the grill on a Morgan Aero. I remember that when I first started working commercially, a lot of people told me that what I was doing was too much like art. But to me that was a positive thing, because like art, a really good car image should evoke an emotional response. Today, the most common compliment I get paid by my clients is … that it looks like art…

“Finally, light is fundamental. The camera is, of course, important. The lens is important. But when it comes to building up an emotion, nothing is more important than light.”

As you might have guessed, Tim does not just photograph cars. He also teaches others to do the same, and being a self-taught photographer himself, he very much believes in the learning by doing methodology.

“Cars are difficult to light,” admits Tim. “They’re large, they’re reflective and they’re multi angled. So, I always say to those who are getting into the industry and want to learn the craft that the best thing to do is to get the best equipment you can and start shooting.

“Start with one light and experiment with the power, proximity and positioning of that light. Don’t read books. Don’t try to copy other people’s work. It’s like riding a bike. You need to fall off a couple of times to learn what works and what don’t. It’s a part of the process, or the journey, if you will.

“But the beginning of that journey is to have consistent lights. That’s the only way to be certain that it’s the power, the proximity or the positing of the light that causes whatever changes you observe. You need lights you can trust. And for me, Profoto is that light.”

Project Rapide – Aston Martin

This week commercial car photographer Tim Wallace spent 3 days on a project for our client Aston working on a series of photographic work of the new Aston Martin Rapide. The work is bound for marketing usage within Europe but also was completed towards additional work for a major one year that AmbientLife and Tim are working on with Aston to produce all the photography for the Aston Martin 100 years Centenary Book that is due to be published and launched in London later this year. The Aston Martin Rapide is a four-door ultra-luxury sedan that borrows styling elements and mechanical components from the brand’s elegant sports cars. For the latest model year, Aston Martin has upgraded its sleek sedan with a more powerful V12 – now boasting 550 horsepower – along with freshened styling and a number of new interior options packages. Aston also changed the name from Rapide to Rapide S to reflect the significant nature of the revisions.

Morgan – Gotham City…

The Morgan Motor Company is quite possibly England’s last great independent Motor Manufacturer.

We were approached several years ago by Morgan to shoot several of their superb models for new brochure designs, including the Aero 8, SuperSport and the prototype EvaGT.

Ambient Life photographer Tim Wallace spent time working with Morgan to produce the work for mainly for use within their brochures and web presence however some of the work is planned to be used in the main Morgan area at the various international Motor Shows such as the recent Geneva show. It is at this time that manufacturers traditionally launch new models and demonstrate their prototypes for the future.

Hasselblad Pro Gallery

Hasselblad recently launched a series of online pro photographer galleries featuring some of the professional work of those photographers working with the Hasselblad system within the industry.

This week our own dedicated page on the Hasselblad website was updated to showcase the recent work of Ambient Life photographer Tim Wallace.

Tim -”The new online portfolio area that Hasselblad have built is a great collection of some of the finest photographers in the World today and I have to say that I do indeed feel very honoured to have my own work featured within it. I have been working in the Hasselblad high end medium format for a few years now and like many professionals I’m constantly aware of the need to strive for the highest quality possible as well as developing new imagery that can really wow my clients, Hasselblad systems give the ability to concentrate on the ‘creative’ aspects and not have to worry about output quality as I know that it’s always going to be at a consistently high level for both myself and my client.
Next month we start that first of our ‘Live Shoot’ seminars and we will be kicking off at the Land Rover plant in Birmingham with a very large two day event that promises to be very exciting and challenging. We will be fully supported at the event from Hasselblad and it will give our attendees an opportunity to shoot with the new H4 system and see for themselves in a live environment why so many professionals like myself choose Hasselblad for all round stability and precision.”

Aston Martin 2 Litre Sports for the Aston 100 Year Book Project

Aston Martin over the years have created and crafted some of the Worlds most recognisable and iconic cars and this year the company celebrate 100 years in the industry. As part of this celebration commercial car photographer Tim Wallace has been commissioned by our client Aston to produce a major book looking through the 100 years to celebrate all the models in the Aston range from the very first model that David Brown created to the latest super cars from the Aston stable such as the DBS and new Vanquish. This week Tim spent time shooting with the iconic 2 Litre Sports created way back in the 40s for the book that is anticipated for release later this year Worldwide.

The luxury brand marked the official anniversary of its founding 100 years ago with a ceremony in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – the original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin, founded on 15 January 1913. Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez – “I am proud to be celebrating 100 years of heritage and the best of British craftsmanship.”
“Aston Martin is known around the world for our leading design combined with advanced technology. Ours is the coolest luxury car brand on the planet and I am looking forward to our second century of building the world’s most desirable sports cars.”

Tim – “Being asked to create all the photography for the 100 years Aston centenary book is indeed a great honour and its a project that we have been working on for just over 7 months now. The book will primarily be a ‘coffee table’ style book of great photography looking at each of the models through the history of Aston Martin design and endeavour to create cars that instil both passion and soul. Its a massive project and currently we are approximately 70% of the way through the project and now concentrating on the lesser known cars that are quite rare to find these days in the same condition as the day that they drove out of the factory gates. For me personally it’s a joy to shoot these cars and we have been working with Aston in the UK and Europe for just over 5 years now so I am very familiar with both the company and the vehicles themselves which is a major benefit to the project for me personally. We are having monthly design meetings for the project and we anticipate that the book will launch in quarter 3 of this year globally, I can’t wait to see all that hard work come together in what I hope will be a book that young and old will enjoy a like.”

Lamborghini Murcielago SV – Death Valley and Route 66

The Lamborghini Murcielago SV is a modern day car that many find instantly recognisable. Some say that Lamborghini has lost some of its ‘madness’ but the Murcielago SV still retains many of the extreme body and performance qualities that gave Lamborghini its reputation for pushing boundaries many years ago. Recently commercial car photographer Tim Wallace was working on location in Death Valley and along the Californian element of route 66 to act as the back drop for this shoot.

If all the senses that get shattered when you drive a truly fast, loud and visceral supercar flat out, the one that’s hardest to put back together is a sense of perspective. The intensity/insanity of the act obliterates normally reliable frames of reference embedded in a world of largely benign forces and sounds. The SV costs £270,000, has 663bhp and can top 212mph without the rear wing fitted to the car you see in these pictures. It is a monster of a supercar if ever there was one – perhaps not the fastest outright, but very possibly the ballsiest there has ever been.

The SV’s personality is akin to that of the bloke who turns up a party with two supermodels on each arm, and leaves with another three in tow. Yet beneath its He-Man exterior, bolstered in the case of the test car by a comically enormous optional carbon fibre rear wing, the SV also showcases how hard Lamborghini is thinking technically nowadays. 0-60mph in 3.2sec and 0-100mph in under seven and only then will you get an inkling of what it feels like to open the accelerator in second gear and hold it there for a while. It’s also one of the most exciting experiences you’ll ever have on four wheels.
