The magazine features each quarter a cross section of work from cutting edge professional photographers from around the world and we were very proud to have Tim’s work showcased in the magazine as well as being held across the front page of the Spring edition of the magazine. Profoto Germany Interview and Magazine Feature

Tim Wallace shoots cars. That is the short explanation. But it is somewhat misleading because looking at Tim’s images you get the feeling that he not only shoots what is in front of the camera, but also what is hidden underneath the body of the car – its heart and soul.

“For me it’s all about creating an emotional image,” says Tim. “I mainly work in the prestige end of the car market, and such brands as Bentley, Jaguar and Aston Martin aren’t sold with reason but with passion and emotion.”

But as we all know, cars are not actually emotional. They are lifeless objects made of plastic and aluminum. So, how do you capture the passion and emotion in something like that?

“First of all, I spend very little time in the studio,” says Tim. “Personally, I don’t believe cars belong there. They belong on the road. That’s where they come alive.

“It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to shoot the entire car to show its personality. Sometimes shooting just a tiny detail is enough, like the rear light on an Aston Martin DB5 or just a fraction of the grill on a Morgan Aero. I remember that when I first started working commercially, a lot of people told me that what I was doing was too much like art. But to me that was a positive thing, because like art, a really good car image should evoke an emotional response. Today, the most common compliment I get paid by my clients is … that it looks like art…

“Finally, light is fundamental. The camera is, of course, important. The lens is important. But when it comes to building up an emotion, nothing is more important than light.”

As you might have guessed, Tim does not just photograph cars. He also teaches others to do the same, and being a self-taught photographer himself, he very much believes in the learning by doing methodology.

“Cars are difficult to light,” admits Tim. “They’re large, they’re reflective and they’re multi angled. So, I always say to those who are getting into the industry and want to learn the craft that the best thing to do is to get the best equipment you can and start shooting.

“Start with one light and experiment with the power, proximity and positioning of that light. Don’t read books. Don’t try to copy other people’s work. It’s like riding a bike. You need to fall off a couple of times to learn what works and what don’t. It’s a part of the process, or the journey, if you will.

“But the beginning of that journey is to have consistent lights. That’s the only way to be certain that it’s the power, the proximity or the positing of the light that causes whatever changes you observe. You need lights you can trust. And for me, Profoto is that light.”

Tim -”It’s always great to have our work displayed at an event of this scale and notoriety, over recent years we have seen an increased interest in the work and photography that we create for our European and US based clients from the manufacturers and suppliers themselves which I personally feel is a real credit to the AmbientLife and the people that we work with each year that help us do what we do best, ‘inspire’ through quality photography. In the first few months of 2013 we have been working with Profoto in Sweden to record 4 distinct videos that talk about our work and our approach and are due to be launched globally on April 1st this year. We have also been working with Nikon UK to supply inspirational car photography that they have used across differing marketing campaigns such as the recent Nikon FX brochures released early 2013 and work that is due to be launched in the coming month through the Nikon PRO magazine. We have also had a long standing relationship with Epson UK and as we have done previously at UK and International events with them, we are once again supplying work that they are displaying in their event area as well as using this for large format test print samples to demonstrate their excellence within the professional printing industry. Its a great honour to work with these companies and not only support their drive within the industry but also the industry as a whole.”

Profoto Sweden Interview

Profoto is a major driving force in the manufacturer of professional lighting systems aimed at the professional photographer and today they released an interview that they recently held with Ambient Life photographer Tim Wallace.

Tim talked openly about his approach to his work and lighting and also the interview contains a breakdown of the lighting that Tim recently demonstrated whilst on a shoot in the US with a Mustang muscle car, recorded for Kelby training as part of a series of four training videos that have now been launched globally and continue to receive strong positive feedback for their open approach and step by step technique.

Profoto full interview online here

Profoto was founded in 1968, in Stockholm, by photographer and engineer Eckhard Heine and photo equipment retailer Conny Dufgran, both Swedish. Their relationship started out with mr Dufgran selling mr Heine a new flash unit – that didn’t work. Annoyed with the failing unit, mr Heine went home and invented a new type of flash, with the focus on durability. Simply by walking around in Stockholm for two weeks, he immediately sold 25 units. Profoto was born – with a bang – and a few months later Eckhard Heine and Conny Dufgran launched the new Pro-1 generator internationally at the Photokina trade show in Cologne.

Hasselblad behind the scenes video

Hasselblad launch a ‘behind the scenes’ film that they shot of photographer Tim Wallace when they accompanied Ambient Life on a shoot off the coast of Palma last month to capture a series of commercial work of the luxury yacht ‘Genevieve’ for a New York client.

N39° 33′ 47 W2° 20′ 43

Tim – “Its was an exciting project and one that in truth has been on the table being discussed through their New York office now for nearly a year. I’m no stranger to shooting prestige modes of transport and I guess I’m best known for my work in the car industry but this project really offers massive scope to ‘get dramatic’ and to some degree I feel like we have a blank canvas to fill which was certainly a challenge but one that both myself and the team were very devoted to. I’ll worked closely with Hasselblad and the support crew to shoot this stunning ship for a marketing campaign that will hopefully not only raise the brand for our client but also offer a new vision for what it possible in the world of yacht and boat photography. I’m hoping that I have managed to inject some real passion into the project with photography that has not been seen before. I think some of the team were a little anxious of my plans to hang out of helicopters at dawn but after numerous meetings to discuss equipment needs and logistics we saw a very busy but productive 2 days shooting. Trying to plan out lighting and requirements for setups was a challenge and we had 8 lights on the boat and others in support boats to each side while I shot quite literally out of a Helicopter, which is fun to say the least.

Halewood Inspired ‘Live Shoot’ event a big success…

This week we held the Land Rover ‘live shoot’ seminar event at the Halewood plant led by UK automotive and commercial advertising photographer Tim Wallace of Ambient Life.

This event is the largest that Calumet are involved with in the UK and it took place at the Land Rover plant in Halewood in a dedicated shooting area that is used by the Land Rover Experience team.

The event was aimed at a select group of mainly professional photographers as they were led through a 2 day course consisting of a ‘live shoot’ with Tim on the first day and then a day in the class room to discuss techniques, workflow and post capture routines.

Hasselblad, Profoto, and Epson provided full product and staff support during the two days and were on hand throughout to assist Tim and help ensure the the attending photographers had the best possible experience. Tim’s ‘live shoot’ seminars started a few years ago after being asked by Jaguar to perform an ‘industry first’ shoot on stage at their Castle Bromwich headquarters, since then we have seen the demand increase and this year not only did we stage 2 of these new extended format 2 days Land Rover seminars but also we have delivered a special Centenary event for Morgan at the factory in Malvern.

Tim – “This year I wanted to extend the format on our Land Rover events as I felt that photographers still had many questions once the live shoot was completed so we decided to extend this year to a 2 day platform. It’s a pretty intense few days for everybody including me in truth but the feed back that we have received from this first event on the new platform is very positive indeed and I’m looking forward to us enjoying more success working with Land Rover. It’s been a great 2 days and the support that I receive from our suppliers such as Hassleblad and Profoto really makes for a great experience for all those that attend, this time we had the new Hasselblad H4 for people to use doing the 1st day shooting out in the field as well as the latest lightweight field lighting solutions from the Profoto team.”

In 2011 we plan to hold more of these with our client Land Rover and details once they become available will be on our news pages and at Calumet Events.

Land Rover Event Huge Success

This week saw the first of two Land Rover based ‘live shoot’ seminars take place, led by UK automotive and commercial advertising photographer Tim Wallace. This first event was the largest that Calumet had ever been involved with and it took place at the Land Rover plant in Birmingham earlier this week. The event was a sell out and the select group of mainly professional photographers were led through a 2 day course consisting of a ‘live shoot’ with Tim on the first day and then a comprehensive day in the class room to discuss techniques, workflow and post capture routines.

Our next Land Rover event will be later this year on October 14th and 15th and will be held at the Halewood plant near Liverpool. It’s been a great 2 days and the support that I receive from our suppliers such as Hassleblad and Profoto really makes for a great experience for all those that attend, this time we had the new Hasselblad H4 for people to use doing the 1st day shooting out in the field as well as the latest lightweight field lighting solutions from the Profoto team.

Feedback from this weeks event

This event was a real success for us all, with all the customers sending us positive feedback. 100% excellent feedback on the score questions which is unheard of for any UK seminar event in our long history of seminars, a hands down success.
Francesca Munden, Calumet Marketing

Really really grateful for 2 days. For me photographically it’s a life-changing event, no question. I learned so much. Hope to see you at future events.
Steve Oxley

Tim hi, wanted to say thank you for your time over the last couple of days, very much appreciated and hugely valued. I’m sure everyone feels the same and I know I learnt a great deal and would leap at any opportunities to do something similar again.
I thought you where very generous with your information and very encouraging, really felt you wanted to help everyone as much as possible. I still think your work is exceptional, simply breathtaking and the fact that you use photoshop so little to achieve what you do is still staggering, my mind is still churning over everything you said and showed us!
David Lund

I just wanted to drop you an email to say a huge thank you for a truly fantastic couple of days shooting and editing with you. The course exceeded my every expectation and not wanting to entirely blow smoke up the proverbial was truly inspirational! I’m already feverishly examining ever car I see thinking about light bouncing of angles and shapes, my girlfriend has had the tour of your site including lengthy explanations about the lack of photoshop!! A combination of elements that you focused on have really resonated with me, control , precision , accuracy and skill all at camera level, something finally clicked and with out a shadow of a doubt car photography is the area I want to develop and hone my skills at. I feel genuinely reinvigorated toward the craft!
Thanks again for a truly inspirational couple of days.
David Hall

Just a quick line to say thanks very much for the last two days at Land Rover. The two days were exactly what I was looking for and all expectations were fully met. I particularly liked the relaxed pace, and the opportunity for informal chatting over a meal was priceless. Thanks!
Be warned, it is now highly likely that I will come along to the Morgan shoot in July!
Mike Roberts

Tim will be holding a further Land Rover ‘Live Shoot’ 2 day event later this year in Halewood at the Land Rover plant that will be in the same format and we expect this to sell out very quickly, those wishing to book on to this event should do so as soon as possible to avoid missing their chance and can do so at Calumet Events Online
