Filming in the US with Tim Wallace and Kelby Training

banner

This week Tim and the crew started shooting a series of new training video’s in the US for Kelby Training. The crew are out in Washington and Florida for just over two weeks and its an exciting programme schedule with 3 brand new classes being completed to compliment the 4 that AmbientLife and Tim already have available with Kelby Training as well as two new in-depth face to face interviews with Tim talking through his life and what inspires him as well as a separate master class on business and how to redefine your view of your industry and your position within it.

US automotive car photography kelby training

Tim - “It’s been a really manic first week out here in the US and currently we are shooting down in Florida with pretty long days to make sure we try to stay on our production schedule, that said its been absolutely fantastic and it’s always a real pleasure to work with the crews from Kelby with some days on set and location where we do really enjoy ourselves and have a damn good laugh even though we are working flat out, true professionalism and a great team I think. I have been working with Kelby for abut 2 years now and this new series of classes were pretty much born from the successes of the first 4 that we recored. The CEO of Kelby Training, Scott Kelby, asked me a few months back to come up with a series of additional classes that would complement what we already had out there with Kelby. During this visit into the US we are recording 3 classes, Lighting a Car with just one light!, squarely aimed at those who may only have 1 speed light. We also have done a class on shooting Motorbikes, this was a really big shoot with lots of Pro lighting gear not to mention a one off customised Harley Davidson from New York and a whole heap of scaffolding! Lastly we looked at shooting Car Interiors, and this was a personal class with Scott himself, again using Pro lighting equipment and looking at just what you can achieve in camera. We have also been filming some interviews, business and personal which have had a great reception so far from those that were on set and in the control room on the days of filming so I personally am hoping that these really inspire people.
It’s been a great first week and I guess we are well on our way to completing the filming on time so thats good news indeed and even before we are ‘all set’, we have already had talking with Kelby and another series of additional classes has already been planned for 2014.”

While Tim is in the US he is also filming several interviews and appearances from Kelby’s ‘The Grid’ to other spots that will appear over the next few months. Below is a recording of his recent appearance on ‘The Grid’ earlier this week in the US were he talks in general about his work but also discusses the benefits to finding your ‘niche’ within your photography commercially.

London Inspired Seminars start the 2013 Tour

london banner

The place was London and it marked the start of the AmbientLife 2013 ‘Inspired’ Photography and Business Seminars given by UK Car and Commercial Photographer Tim Wallace.
The Tour this year takes on eight major cities throughout the UK from London to Edinburgh.

Tim -“It’s always great to kick off a tour in London, for me it’s one of those places that I spend a lot of time in working and having meetings and I guess you could say that I have a love hate relationship with, love the diversity, hate the traffic!.”

car photography and car photography

“This year the discussion is very much centered on business, what it actually takes in my view to become a professional and business viable commercial photographer and also those ‘little details’ that in my view make all the difference when you are trying to get your business off the ground and make those first tentative steps. My business model so to speak my well not be what people expect but as a working professional myself these days the only main concern I have is trying to ensure I allow myself some time off now and again as my own business AmbientLife publically pushes forward in these difficult commercial times. The event in London went very well indeed and and had a good mix of both established professional photographers and assistants wanting to take those first steps themselves. I am also delighted that for the first time since I started giving these seminar talks almost 5 years ago now, we have this year introduced a second separate day dedicated to looking purely at photography, this is aimed squarely at those that may not work within the industry as such but are still keen to learn about techniques, lighting and talk through what makes a truly ‘inspirational’ image. We had a great few days and I was as delighted as always to meet new people and make some great new friends. I look forward to the other venues around the country as we continue these talks over the coming months.”

The 2013 UK Tour will be discussing the important issues in regard to making your first moves towards starting out in Commercial Photography and this year Tim is covering such topics as;

*Photographer or Data Capture?
*Buying equipment
*Making a business plan
*Tax and VAT
*Building a portfolio
*What it ‘really’ takes to be a commercial photographer
*Marketing yourself
*Presenting work
*Pricing work and quotes

The Inspired Tour

Each year Tim delivers a UK tour of venues around the UK from London to Scotland and talks in depth about subjects such as workflow, commercial photography, business development, and how to improve your technique. The tour events are very soundly based on commercial photography in general and also take an in depth look at many aspects of the photography business. These tours are very popular and please note that availability is to restricted numbers.

inspire london

These talks take a rare insight into the world of commercial photography through the eyes of a professional working in this environment both nationally and internationally, and offer people the chance to gain further knowledge in what it takes to become a success in a career that is notorious for its high failure rate.

Tim discusses many aspects of photography including work-flow and how he approaches it for maximum efficiency, equipment in respect of DSLR Vs Medium format as well as lighting and just how he feels that shooting styles have changed over the last 10 years. He also openly speaks about the industry and personally talks through some of his own work, explaining his thought process and how he approaches a shoot and well as his own experiences of how to first approached the commercial market as a new comer. Finally we look at digital as a whole, some techniques Tim uses in Photoshop that he designed as well as looking at the importance of a fluid professional work-flow, discussing if it is still a ‘pure’ medium and how to regain that ‘shooting on film’ feeling that many professionals feel has been lost.

The Interview

How did you get into commercial car photography?
“Shooting cars was purely a business decision. I’m not really a petrol head, but I’d always quite liked cars from a sculptural point of view. However, I’m very into ‘products’ and how things are sold.”

You shoot promo pictures for the likes of Aston Martin, Jaguar and Audi – how did you land those plum clients?
“A lot of photographers start out believing that they need to shoot everything so they have a chance of getting some work in. It was something that I thought of as well in the first few months, but you’re not going to build a reputation for doing everything – you need to find a niche. And my niche was going to be expensive, prestige cars. I also wanted to centre on the classic side of things. Because you’re going to pay, what, £160,000 for a DBS, but a DB5 can set you back up to £600,000. So from the product point of view, to sell a DB5 is harder and it needs powerful imagery.”

What’s the toughest aspect of the job?
“The lighting. A lot of people will say if you’re shooting an Aston Martin DBS with a Hasselblad, you can’t really fail to get a good picture. But trust me, you can. If you shoot on a Hasselblad it doesn’t guarantee you a good picture. If you don’t put the effort in, all you’re going to end up with is extremely high resolution sh*t. Also, cars are basically multi-angled reflective surfaces and they are very difficult to light. Every car is different – some can be quite easy from a lighting point of view, while others are very difficult.”

So, you’ve got the cars, how do you find the right locations to shoot them in?
“That’s the bane of my life, to be honest, although Google Earth is the most fantastic tool for people like me as you can literally drop yourself into a place and have a look around. My partner, Jess is an absolute star when it comes to trying to find locations and the logistics of getting there, as it can be a nightmare for us with our equipment. Most of the time I’m trying to dissipate gear over several people and pretend that the incredibly heavy Peli cases we’re using as hand luggage don’t weight anything.”

How do you pull off the dramatic low-angled pictures of cars in motion?
“One of the places I use quite a lot is the high-speed test track at Gaydon, as it’s not something I would attempt on a public road. I know that there are a lot of kids out there who hang out the back of their mate’s car while someone hangs onto their belt, and they try and take these dramatic pictures. But I have harnesses that I bought from companies that supply safety equipment to oil rig workers. I don’t even fix myself into one point, I fix myself into three different points in the car, just in case. I had to shoot some stuff for Jaguar where we were doing about 80mph, and I’m basically sat backwards on the tailgate, roped in with a harness on, trying to shoot this car at about 1/15sec. The pictures looked really dramatic, but safety always comes first.”

car photographer car photography automotive photography commerci

Getting started
“I left the Royal Marines, went into media network management and got made redundant. Twice. Everyone said that I should go into photography, so in November 2006, I spent five days doing a business plan.”

Staying safe
“I don’t use camera straps. People find it a bit weird, but if you shoot a lot out of cars that are moving, you would understand why no-one ever wears a camera strap in my game – it can potentially rip your hand off.”

Lighting
“Different paint types affect your lighting set-up. BMW does a silver paint which disperses the light – you can go right into the bodywork with the light at 90 degrees and it’ll disperse it, scatter it, and it’s gorgeous. But you can get the same silver in other make and you just get a burnt highlight that looks bloody awful.”

Retouching
“If it’s the standard day-to-day stuff, such as brochure work, then I wouldn’t spend longer than about 10 minutes retouching an image. I tend to try and achieve everything in-camera that I can using lighting, rather than thinking I’ll put it right later on in Photoshop.”

Inspiration
“People don’t really develop their own photographic style as much these days. They tend to spend a lot of time analysing and trying to reverse-engineer people’s work that they see online. I don’t look at other car photographers’ work, because I’m going to be influenced by it – you can’t help it.”

Gear
“I use DSLRs and I use medium format, but ultimately they’re just tools. I do get people occasionally commenting on my Hasselblad, saying that it looks expensive and must take amazing pictures. And I always think, it’s interesting that. If you went into Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant and had a fantastic meal, you wouldn’t turn round to him and say ‘you must have a fantastic oven, mate.’”

Land Rover Pro Live Shoot Event – England

Land Rover Tim Wallace Photography

The location was the Land Rover ‘proving ground and test track within the massive Land Rover factory complex in Solihull England. The weather was very British…, and the event was the 2013 Land Rover Pro Live Shoot Seminar Event with Commercial Car Photographer Tim Wallace.
The event itself brought photographers in from far and wide including Denmark, the Netherlands and even one dedicated chap who flew all the way from Melbourne Australia just to attend this one day event with Tim. The event was designed by Tim to give the audience a real feel for what is involved on a professional commercial car shoot, and followed the entire shooting process through from car placement and light positioning to finished photography with full support from Profoto UK and also Nikon UK. The day was spent looking at 2 very different setups using multiple Pro lights working together and also looking at problems that car photographers face whilst on location and how to work to find solutions to these using position and lighting. The vehicles donated kindly by our client Land Rover for the event were the new Range Rover Evoque and the legendary Land Rover G4.

Tim- “Many photographers find ‘live shoots’ in front of a large audience a little daunting for obvious reasons but in my view its really the best way to help people understand not only whats involved technically but also creatively. To try and do this in a class room would be a little I think like trying to explain how to drive to somebody who has never even seen a car…
I’m very fortunate that I have wonderful support on hand from people such as Profoto who are happy to supply both equipment and support staff on the day so that the photographers attending also get an opportunity to try out some of the latest equipment and gain further user based knowledge. I really enjoyed the Land Rover event and it was a resounding success given the very positive feedback that it received.”

Following huge demand since previous years ‘industry first’ live shoot car photography seminars by photographer Tim Wallace the event was sold out quite early on this year however we are now in talks with Calumet and Land Rover to hold additional events to continue to cope with the demand.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

christmas 800

As 2012 grows to a near and Christmas approaches we would like to take the opportunity to wish all our clients and our colleagues a very merry Christmas and a peaceful and fruitful New Year.
2012 has been a very eventful year for Ambientlife and has seen our company complete projects and commercial shoots around the globe as well as Tim continuing his work in delivering seminars in the UK, Europe and the US. We have seen great success from the training video’s that Tim recorded in the US earlier this year as a guest of Scott Kelby and Kelby Training and there are plans to return to the US in early 2013 to record some further classes to add to the catalogue of work available online for people to view. 2012 also saw Tim continue his work with some of our long established clients such as Aston and Jaguar as we strove forward to support these clients with their media requirements such as the exciting new ‘Aston Legend’ book that Tim is currently working on and is expected to be published world wide in 2013, and work for Jaguar to support their needs at international trade shows and motor events.

2012 review 900

Tim - “Its been an amazing year that all started off really in the US with the launch of the video work we recored for Kelby, never one to be completely comfortable in front of a camera and more at home behind it I think, but this work has received great reviews across the globe and I am very touched and pleased that so many people have written to me since their release in February to say that these classes have really helped them understand light and look at photography in a different and new way, very well worth while and satisfying.
Its been a busy year with our automotive car work as always and we have had the addition of some pretty big projects that have stretched us at times but its all been a great learning curve in life and one that has lead us to meet some amazing people and visit some remarkable locations and places around the globe. Probably one of my biggest challenges this year has been to start work on the ‘Aston Legends’ book. I remember the first production meeting for this at Aston and at the time it was described to me as like ‘eating an elephant’ one mouth full at a time…lol
There is a huge amount of work to do as you simply don’t realise just what goes into filling a 400 page book until you actually sit down and start to plan it out but I am glad to say that we estimate that we are over 50% of the way through now and its very exciting indeed and I look forward greatly to see the completed book available and on the book store shelves, personally this is a life time goal for me and one thats been very satisfying indeed.
The year ended commercially for us in California shooting various work throughout the area and visiting some truly amazing locations such as Death Valley, LA, and Yosemite National Park. Throughout all our work it would not be possible to achieve the work that I do without the support of those that we work with and most of all my life and business partner Jess who simply is the most supportive and amazing person in her own right with her brilliant behind the scenes work on logistics and locations as well as bring the glue behind the scenes that helps keep everything together and me on the straight and narrow.
The year end is almost here and myself and Jess have taken some time out to be at our home in Switzerland to enjoy this festive period with friends and family not to mention catch up some skiing in the Alps where I hope to survive another year…!
I would like to personally wish all the people that we have met this year a very merry Christmas and a very peaceful and happy New Year as we look forward to many more adventures and challenges ahead of us.”

Wallace Interview – US

Over the last 3 weeks Tim Wallace has been in the US working several projects that have seen him shooting work in San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley Salt Flats and down in L.A.
Ephotozine caught up with photographer Tim Wallace outside LA after a shoot and interviewed him about his work, his approach and what drives him after starting his business from scratch only 6 years ago and already receiving great notoriety with the industry for his work and style as well as being the recipient of many awards.

The Interview

Tim Wallace has had a varied and interesting life, from working in the media, to being in the Royal Marines, before eventually deciding to set up AmbientLife.co.uk, a hugely successful car photographic company.
Here, he tells us a bit about his life, his equipment, and his inspirations.Tim is originally form York and first gained an interest in photography at the age of eight through developing film images. “My grandfather was keen on cars, and used to take all these images but could never be bothered to develop them! I used to develop his pictures in the garden shed, which first sparked my interest in photography, and particularly cars,’ said Tim.

Tim believes that this has given him an edge in terms of photography, even in this digital age: “I like to use tone, texture and contrast, and these features can be difficult to grasp at first if you’ve never developed and printed an image.”

Tim spent some time as a press photographer, and this got him thinking about angles and the types of images that you can take: “I used to go to these events, like the prime minister issuing a statement, for example, and it was always difficult to get a good position for a shot. I tried to get a different angle on the event, by going behind the speaker, getting down low and taking a shot of their feet, with the crowd in the background. I was always looking for pictures that told a different story to the one everyone else’s pictures told.”

After leaving the paper industry, Tim went to work for a press agency, which unfortunately was short lived after a mini recession hit the country. “I decided to join the Royal Marines, of all things!” Laughs Tim. “For a big portion of my life photography became a hobby, and I honed my skills in photographing more varied subjects.”
Tim decided to go back to a career in photography in 2006. “I just sat down at my kitchen table for five days solid, and came up with a business plan for a photography company specialising in car photography,” says Tim. Luckily, it worked, and AmbientLife was born.

AmbientLife is now a huge company with clients such as Aston Martin and Jaguar queueing up for Tim’s magical car photography skills.

The success of the business is down to finding a niche in the market, as Tim explains: “The industry was crying out for emotional photography, that really connects with the cars being photographed. Classic cars are very expensive, and the photos need to represent that and the character of the car to be successful. There was a niche in the market for quality, emotional car photography. A fresh edge was needed, and this was achieved by doing something different and not mimicking others.”

Tim uses the Aston Martin DB5 and DB9 as examples. “The DB5 (below) is romantic, so you’d be looking at shooting it in traditional settings such as the Alps. Cars to me are like people, in that they have personalities. The DB9 is a more violent, aggressive car, so it needs to be shot to bring that across to the viewer.”

When Tim started out with the business, he was told that it would fail because he was too old, didn’t live in London and that his photos were too arty.

He has turned these criticisms on their head, and they are now his main advantages. Living away from London means that it is easier for him to travel all over the country, and the artiness of his work enables him to discuss with clients what they want, to get a truly representative photo, rather than something that is seen as bog-standard in the car industry.

Tim uses top-of-the-range equipment to bring his creations to life. He uses a Nikon D3s and a variety of Hasselblad cameras, depending on the circumstances. “It’s whetever you’re comfortable with, really,” Tim explains. “Don’t get me started on the Canon/ Nikon debate. They each have their pros and cons, and at the end of the day you need to choose what works best for you in your job or hobby. What matters is that you use the equipment correctly, and better yourself through it to achieve better photos. It’s not all about the camera, it’s the person behind the camera too.”

Here, he shares with us his top car photography tips:

Get Down Low
“People in the industy used to meet me and think I was about three feet tall because of the low angle I use on my shots!” says Tim. “A low angle helps to make the car look imposing and impressive to the viewer.”

Make The Light Minimal And Natural
“I usually only use one light source,”explainsTim. “The aim is to make the light look as natural as possible – remember that a car is basically a giant reflective surface, so too much light wil spoil a photo. Try and get the light to come from the same direction as the natural light if there is any, to fill the scene and emphasise the shape of the car.”

Shoot Wide Open
“Your choice of lens is very important. A 50mm f/1.4 lens is very underestimated,” says Tim. “You should use a variety of lenses for different types of shot. Don’t let yourself get pidgeonholed.”

The Shot Is More Than The Car Itself
“The scenery can be just as important as the car itself, and should represent something about the car.” Says Tim. “For example, the style of the shot can match the temperament of the car. Cars have different personalities, just like people, so the shot should represent that.”

Use Filters
Tim uses two ND grad filters for most of his shoots as he explains: “I use one the right way around to balance out the sky, and one upside down to to give the tarmac a dark and broody look. Without a filter, tarmac can look a nasty dull colour.”

Minimal Editing
“I try and get the shoot as close as possible to finished actually on the shoot,” reveals Tim. “This saves time when having to edit shots later on, with only minimal tweaks being needed. I can do a shoot, and have all the images edited and ready on location in a couple of hours.”

2013 Seminar Tour Dates Announced

We are very pleased to announce the dates and venues for the 2013 ‘Be Inspired’ tour of seminars and live shoot Pro events to be held by Photographer Tim Wallace of AmbientLife.
Each year Tim delivers a UK tour of venues around the UK from London to Scotland and talks in depth about subjects such as work flow, commercial photography, business development, and how to improve your technique. The tour events are very soundly based on commercial photography in general and also take an in depth look at many aspects of the photography business. These tours normally take place each year and have always proved very popular.
We look forward to enjoying the tour is 2013 that will start with a ‘Pro live shoot’ event that we have organised with our client Land Rover to be given on the Land Rover proving ground at their plant in Solihull in the UK on the 8th February 2013. The talks this year that Tim has designed and written himself will be delivered throughout the UK starting in February in Edinburgh, Scotland and will cover the major cites including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Glasgow, with some additional events to be announced soon in the US as well as Holland and Germany.

Tim’s Background
Photographer Tim Wallace is the driving force and creative thinking behind Ambient Life.
An award winning photographer his work is often described as both conceptual and dramatic.
Tim works internationally with many high end brands and clients such as Aston, Land Rover Jaguar and Morgan in the UK to Kenwood and Audi in the US.
His work has been published globally and has been showcased in the infamous’Victor’ Magazine, a industry Worldwide and highly acclaimed industry leading magazine. He was recently named by as one of the UK’s most creative photographers whilst in the US Scott Kelby described Tim recently as one of the Ten most influential photographers in the World today, Tim’s view is a little more straight forward, a man who’s known for his down to earth attitude, his feet are firmly on the ground and his desire to produce creative work is one that he has been driven to from a very young age when he first picked up a camera, “Photography is for me simply a creative passion, the ability to use light and form to capture in a single image what I see in my own imagination…”

He is the humble recipient of many awards including International Advertising Photographer of the Year 2010, UK Motor Industry Photographer of the Year 2010, Hasselblad Photographer of the month Oct 2010, Professional Photographer of the Year 2009 as well as receiving Distinction Awards for his work from such professional boards as the RPS. Tim’s company Ambientlife was recently honored in the Best New Business awards and won the ‘Best new Creative Business Award’ for 2011, something that we are very proud of and a testament to his dedication and drive towards our clients and his work in the field of commercial photography.

“My work is often regarded as conceptual and dramatic and to me photography is a process, you’ll never hear me mutter ‘it’ll be fine’ as that’s simply not enough for me. Life is short and I aim to make mine worth while and interesting with work that I hope reflects this.
My goal in life is to be myself always, be creative, be true and most of all improve just a little part of peoples lives with images that both entertain and sometimes invoke the feelings that I had when I shot them. I’ve won awards and I’m always of the thought that maybe they got the wrong Tim Wallace, hey I’m grateful always but never take myself or any achievements too seriously, life’s too short and people will forget you quickly.
I jumped off a cliff in Norway a few years ago in a BASE jump, why?, well because it felt right for me to do that for myself at that time, I truly believe that anything in life is possible, work hard, be an honest person, tell the people that you love just what they mean to you as often as you can, and most of all be out there shooting because sometimes that’s where amazing things can happen.”

Profoto Sweden Interview

Profoto is a major driving force in the manufacturer of professional lighting systems aimed at the professional photographer and today they released an interview that they recently held with Ambient Life photographer Tim Wallace.

Tim talked openly about his approach to his work and lighting and also the interview contains a breakdown of the lighting that Tim recently demonstrated whilst on a shoot in the US with a Mustang muscle car, recorded for Kelby training as part of a series of four training videos that have now been launched globally and continue to receive strong positive feedback for their open approach and step by step technique.

Profoto was founded in 1968, in Stockholm, by photographer and engineer Eckhard Heine and photo equipment retailer Conny Dufgran, both Swedish. Their relationship started out with mr Dufgran selling mr Heine a new flash unit – that didn’t work. Annoyed with the failing unit, mr Heine went home and invented a new type of flash, with the focus on durability. Simply by walking around in Stockholm for two weeks, he immediately sold 25 units. Profoto was born – with a bang – and a few months later Eckhard Heine and Conny Dufgran launched the new Pro-1 generator internationally at the Photokina trade show in Cologne.
