Photographer Tim Wallace is the driving force and creative thinking behind Ambient Life. An award winning photographer his work is often described as both conceptual and dramatic.
Tim works internationally with many high clients across the globe such as Jaguar Land Rover, Peugeot, Mercedes and Morgan as well as shooting some of the worlds most iconic brands such as Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari in the UK and Europe to Dodge, Chevrolet and Mustang in the US.

He is a photographer who is renowned for not only being very driven and creative about his own photography but also is very open in his approach to he business aspects of commercial photography within the market place today. Tim’s work has been published all over the World and he has been refereed to as one of most creative photographers within his specialised field of commercial automotive photography. In the US Scott Kelby described Tim recently as one of the 10 most influential photographers in the World today and also a man who greatly inspires others, not only within his own industry but beyond. Tim’s view of all this is a little more straight forward, a man who’s very well known for his down to earth attitude, his feet are very firmly on the ground. His desire to produce creative work is one that has driven him from a very young age at the point he first picked up a camera, “Photography is for me simply a creative passion, the ability to use light and form to capture in a single solitary image what I see within my own imagination at that point in time…”

7th to the 9th April 2015
Location – Tallinn, Estonia

We are pleased to announce that Commercial Car Photographer Tim Wallace will be at the ‘I AM PHOTOGRAPHER’ Event based in Estonia in April 2016 to give both a seminar class and a live shoot workshop.

Platform and Seminar details along with booking information is available on the link above.

My Journey – Talk with Tim Wallace – 9th April 2016
Described recently as one of the 10 most influential photographers operating professionally today he looks back on his extraordinary journey over the last 7 years that have taken him for the very starting point of his own business ‘AmbientLife’ to where he is operating today within the commercial industry, the iconic images that Tim has become recognised for and also looking at the decisions that he made along that path to carve out his niche within the car industry. Tim will be talking through some of his work as well as openly discussing how he started from nothing to build up a recognisable style and brand, the mistakes and successes along the journey and his own personal view on what is important to succeed within this very competitive arena today. A very frank an open presentation on what Tim sees as the key factors to success as well as getting into the right frame of mind to succeed in business as a commercial photographer and how today photographers perceive themselves and their work within the client market and perhaps how his own approach and methods differ from the more traditional approaches. A class that is not to missed for all those starting on their own journeys and also for those truly interested in being given the chance to have their opinions opened to a new way of thinking and approaching business.

Mercedes Live Shoot Workshop – 10th April 2016
Tim Wallace works internationally as a commercial photographer but is arguably best known for his work within the prestige end of the luxury car industry, shooting for such clients as Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover.
The work that he produces is both strong in its style and its appearance and Tim’s signature work is that with lighting of cars and his ability to create amazing detail shots for his high end clients of their cars for use on billboards, showrooms and brochures.

In this class Tim will be shooting a car live as part of his workshop and looking at how we can work with light to get some very dramatic photography using just a small amount of lighting equipment. He will be talking through how he approaches each shoot, identifying the problems with shooting cars and lighting them effectively as well as demonstrating different lighting techniques and how these can be adapted to shoot in different situations. The class will be very much a hands on class where those attending will also be invited to try out the lighting routines themselves and work as a team with Tim to really gain a base knowledge of not only how to light a car but also the mechanics of why and how the light properties can be changed effectively through the different ways of working with the lighting and modifiers.

Gulf Photo Plus 2016 in Dubai

Banner GPP

Some months ago photographer Tim Wallace was approached by the organisers of Gulf Photo Plus, a premium photographic event that is held in Dubai each year, and asked to participate in the 2016 event. We are very happy to announce that Tim has agreed to take part in this GPP 2016 event in beautiful Dubai and will be there as one of the main instructors in February 2016 between the 5th and the 12th where he will be running two separate two day intense courses on car photography.

The first is aimed at the confident beginner and will take place with attendees shooting alongside Tim in a studio for one day and then on occasion for a day. The second course is also a two day course but this time based on working with intermediate and professional level photographers, again this will be one day in the studio and then a day separately on location.
Tim will also be doing other talks whilst there in Dubai including his ‘Inspired Business’ seminar.

We look forward to what we strongly believe will be an amazing one week event with many great photographers attending to create some amazing captures and learn some new techniques.

The Experience of PSW

Tim – “This was my very first PSW event, Scott had previously invited me a few times to take part but workload ands such like prevented me attending in previous years, this year was totally different and it was great to get involved and be a part of this amazing event. Nothing really prepared me for the sheer scale of the whole event and the location in Las Vegas was within the convention centre of the Mandalay Bay Resort and oh boy what a resort! Mandalay Bay is not only possibly one of the biggest Resorts in Las Vegas but it really is like a little town within itself with everything to hand and was truly the perfect place to host something of this nature that was on such a grand scale.

The first morning we were ushered into our seats at the front of the hall used for the Key Note Opening speech were the instructors and partners are positioned and 15 minutes later the doors opened and the crowds quite literally broke through to get the best seats that they could, it was amazing the energy and enthusiasm of the crowds. The key note itself was a real pleasure to watch and following the official opening we prepared for the first of our classes to deliver that an hour later. I have spoken in many different countries over the years on lighting, photography and business but never to a US audience on this scale and I have to say that I really enjoyed it immensely. The crowds were both polite and very enthusiastic about all the seminars that went on over that 3 days period. The lighting class that I gave on the ‘Pre Con’ day went really well and its not often that you get to drive a Ferrari through a hotel, which is something that we had to do so that we could get it into place for the live shoot event 🙂

I delivered my class’s on ‘Inspired Business’, this year back to back in a monster 2 hour session that got such amazing great feedback and many of those attending are now requesting more of the same for 2016 with possibly even longer more in-depth business talks, thats great for me because to me this is a massive subject that I love to discuss and teach on.
I knew that this may well be a popular class but nothing prepared me for the scale of that, on the morning of the event we were given one of the largest halls at the convention centre and turn out for that class was the biggest of the entire event for us, it was amazing and very touching indeed for me personally. At the end of each class those attending are asked to fill out a short feedback form allowing them to give their thoughts on the class, its effectiveness, delivery and such like.

On a final note I would like to really say from my heart a huge thank you to the support staff of KelbyOne, these are the guys that work very long hours behind the scenes to make sure that instructors such as myself have everything that we need as well as looking after all the video and audio for each class and event. We made some amazing new friends with the team and I was touched that indeed some KelbyOne guys actually came to attend a few classes themselves between their own duties. The event itself was both physically demanding for those involved with busy days and many after show parties each night, all of which were utterly amazing 🙂 and also gave people like myself a real chance to talk and meet those attending PSW.
Lastly I would say a huge thank you to the other instructors themselves, we met some amazing people on this journey and made some life long friends and we are already looking forward to 2016 PSW in Las Vegas so we can do it all again !”

Tim’s Live Classes for 2015 Las Vegas

Building A Successful Business Model (Part 1)
Class 1 is the first part of a 2 part back to back hardcore Business class by Tim on how to achieve success and think laterally about your brand and direction. Photographer Tim Wallace is the driving force and creative thinking behind Ambient Life. An award winning photographer his work is often described as both conceptual and dramatic. Tim works internationally with many high end brands and in this business based session he will start by looking briefly at what kind of work he has built his business model on and then move the thought and work process to start to build up a successful photography business and achieve a positive global reputation, positioning yourself successfully within your chosen industry, this is something that Tim is very aware of having built a successful business himself and a respected name within just 7 years from scratch. The session will look at how to make the right informed choices and how to set a clear vision for your own path way to success rather than just ‘hope’ things work out and the phone rings with work for you.

Taking Your Business Forward (Part 2)
Photographer Tim Wallace is the driving force and creative thinking behind Ambient Life. An award winning photographer, his work is often described as both conceptual and dramatic. Class 2 is the second part of a 2 part back to back hardcore Business class by Tim on how to achieve success and think laterally about your brand and direction. This second part to the business session will look at how he gained his initial clients, won contracts and kept his clients as he an them evolved. It will look at how to approach agencies, how to effectively make those first steps and approaches to clients and agencies and most of all and utterly crucially it will be about explaining how to understand your position better within the field and how to put yourself and your work across in such a way that your clients understand your benefits to them and not just that you can take nice pictures. It’s about becoming a monster in your industry and creating a need for what you do and not just sitting there and waiting for the phone to ring.

Live Car Shoot – Pre Con Special Event
Tim Wallace is renowned within the car industry for his car photography for such leading market brands as Aston Martin and Jaguar. This special PreCon event gives you the opportunity to see Tim work with lighting a car as well as work through different aspects of how light can be used effectively for this very difficult lighting subject. Many of the lessons taught and techniques used will translate into other areas too where lighting reflective subjects is involved such as product photography so one not to be missed for sure. This is very much a hands on event where Tim will explain and demonstrate many different aspects of lighting from his personal knowledge gained over years of working within this industry.
*Limited to 40 participants

Live Car Shoot
This live shoot is a condensed 1 hour version of the pre con special event where Tim will do some live lighting setups shooting a car and talk through some of the techniques he uses when he is working commercially as a car photographer for his clients. He will look at some of the lighting positions that can help you get the best results for those that perhaps only have one or two lights as well as demonstrating how to get the most from these lights in some differing scenarios.

Photoshop World is the place to be if your want to learn from some of the top photographers in the World today, all under one roof in this spectacular event that offers 3 days of shows and on stage seminars, get to meet the instructors off stage, special events and parties in the evening and one of the worlds biggest Expo events all in the desert city on Las Vegas. “What happens in Vegas, usually ends up on YouTube!…”

Photoshop World is where creative people from all walks of life come to take part in affordable, hands-on learning that can’t be found anywhere else. Gaining valuable, real-world experience from innovative instructors, while building camaraderie amongst creatives with shared passions. From beginners to experts, teachers to students, hobbyists to professionals, this is place where everyone is invited to share, network and engage in a welcoming community.

The lighting class that I gave on the 2nd day went really well and its not often that you get to drive a sports car through a hotel, which is something that we had to do so that we could get it into place for the live shoot event 🙂
Following the feedback from that live shoot lighting class it has already been announced that from the high demand that in 2015 I will be back in Las Vegas to give more classes and the live shoot event will be making up part of the ‘pre con’ day which occurs the day before the official launch of PSW allowing a select number of instructors to give major time to a reduced and select class of people over a 4 to 5 hour period, this is something that I was very pleased to have been asked to do and it will be great to be able to really get into a lot more depth on the lighting class in 2015 because of this.

car photography

In the final day I delivered my class on ‘Inspired Business’, I knew that this may well be a popular class but nothing prepared me for the scale of that, on the morning of the event we were given one of the largest halls at the convention centre and turn out for that class was the biggest of the entire event for us, it was amazing and very touching indeed for me personally. At the end of each class those attending are asked to fill out a short feedback form allowing them to give their thoughts on the class, its effectiveness, delivery and such like. From the feedback off the Business class we were later told that it had received some of the very best feedback of any class during the entire event and from all the classes given over that 2014 event, as a result Scott Kelby himself made a request that at the 2015 we not only deliver this class again but by request of those attending, we also make it a much longer class and I am currently looking at putting that back to back across a double session for 2015.

Following the excellent and very kind feedback that we received from those that attended the classes over the three day period I was asked to give a speech at the closing ceremony on the final day so once again I was on stage but this time in front of the entire volume of those that had attended the 2014 PSW event. I have to admit I was slightly nervous as the event had I was told attracted over 26,000 people this year, giving it one the highest attendance records in all its history.

Lastly I would say a huge thank you to the other instructors themselves, we met some amazing people on this journey and made some life long friends and we are already looking forward to 2015 PSW in Las Vegas so we can do it all again !”

Tim’s background working with KelbyOne

Tim has been a KelbyOne instructor for 4 years now and over in the US Scott Kelby described Tim as one of the most influential car photographers in the World today and Tim was invited to the US by Kelby and with their filming and production crew produced a set of one hour long video tutorials that cover the in-depth aspects of the lighting of cars in photography, Tim’s the approach to a shoot and the issues and solutions that can arise in different situations and working with just available light effectively. These video seminars are available online through KelbyOne.

The video seminars have since proved a huge success and have received some great feedback from the tens of thousands of professional and amateur based viewers Worldwide that have used them to help them understand items from new lighting techniques to how to look at a scene and work to build up for a more atmospheric photographic capture. The videos also look at working with just one light for those that wish to try out and experiment in this field but have limited equipment available as well as some dedicated photoshop retouching and digital processing classes. Tim is now a regular guest at Kelby and continues to build on the catalogue of training videos available through his dedicated area on the Kelby site where he is one of the official KelbyOne instructors in the World alongside some of the biggest names in the photography today such as Joe McNally and Jay Maisel. F2 Freelance Photographer – Interview with Tim Wallace

banner F2

This week saw the release of the January / February 2015 Edition of ‘F2 Freelance Photographer’ Magazine
This edition features a article regarding the new VAT regulations that are set to come into force from January 2015 that will affect ‘digital’ sales for photographers, the feature looks at what the new regulations mean as well as talking to commercial photographer Tim Wallace and exploring his views on exhibitions and print sales.

TIM WALLACE is internationally known for his automotive photography, though it’s been built on a history of an award- winning military career and a diverse attack on the advertising and commercial markets in hius second incarnation. His highest profile projects today are Aston Martin calendars, poster prints and books and it’s his car photography in general which generates most print sales to enthusiasts.

“Print sales are something that I have been involved in since pretty much the very start of my business. They come in many forms and can vary from requests from private individuals for their own homes to corporate companies who wish to have hard hitting images in their board rooms”, Tim tells us. “I also have a selection of organisations around the world who sell some of my private non- automotive work – this is mainly landscape and street photography, and they sell those and pay a monthly commission.
“This year saw me stage my first exhibition of private work, of a personal project that I shot in Death Valley. The exhibition did so well that it is still in place after being extended by a further three months in the gallery and I am proud to say that the exhibition print sales broke all previous records for an exhibition – normal run time one month – within its first 48 hours…

“My prints sell across the world and I think over the years I have sold to just about every country, its also interesting to note that prints sell prints… what I mean by this
is that its quite common to see an order come in from, say, a New York address and then a week later another comes in from a separate address close to that original one.
“Good quality prints are the key here and you just can not beat a good sized well printed piece of work – done properly it will always attract attention”.

Tim’s recent work has been printed on analogue silver-based Fujifilm Crystal Archive colour papers, by Digitalab of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His Death Valley exhibition in their gallery, previewed in our September/ October issue, was due to end on September 18th and they must have been well pleased with sales to keep it on show until Christmas.

The History of Darwin

Death Valley was not a very hospitable place for a small group of men trying to make their way to the San Joaquin Valley. Camped in the Argus Range, they were hungry and close to exhaustion when it was discovered the only working gun was a rifle with a missing sight so killing any game for food seemed out of the question. An Indian guide said he could fix it and took the gun vanishing into the hills, he returned sometime later and the rifle had a new sight of pure silver. Some years later, one of the original party, a Dr Darwin French, returned to the Argus Range in 1874 to locate the mysterious “Gun Sight Mine” and he discovered silver and other mineral deposits and mining operations began soon after with the site, and later the town, being given the name of ‘Darwin’.
By 1877, Darwin had over 3500 people with water pumped down from springs in the surrounding mountains. There was a silver smelter, a Wells Fargo office, two general stores, a hotel, several saloons and a brothel. Because the site was isolated and populated by miners with little to do for recreation but drink, gunfights were common, and the outbound silver shipments were frequently the targets of gangs of bandits trying to steal the load. One large wooden building near the centre of town served as a schoolhouse, a saloon, and a brothel all at the same time!

In 1879 the miners staged a violent strike for higher pay culminating in a large fire, believed to be arson, that hit Darwin on April 30 of that year. Many buildings were destroyed, including mine offices, the mine operators quickly pulled out and the now permanently unemployed miners had no choice but to do the same and by 1880, the population of Darwin was only 85. But it never completely died…

1908 arrived and new lead and copper strikes were made in the area and people quickly began to return to Darwin. By the 1920s, the population was back up to several thousand and appears to have remained steady with the town growing and flourishing deep within Death Valley. In the early 1950’s mining was greatly expanded once again in Darwin, a new mining camp complete with housing facilities for workers was built and for a period in the late 1950s, Darwin was the largest producer of lead in the United States and flourishing town in all respects.

Around the late 1960’s whilst the town was booming things seem to have abruptly stopped, the miners and their families all left, many leaving their homes as they stood on the day that they all left town.
Almost as if they walked away, house doors left open, airstreams at the side on the drive and cars parked neatly in front of old picket fences.
Possessions remain still in place with their once busy homes, tins on the side in the kitchen, and beds laying neatly made with nothing more than a think layer of sandy dust, baking in the sunlight that shines through windows that have their drapes still hanging. There are no real records to why everybody suddenly left Darwin and indeed ‘how’ they all managed to leave as many of their trucks and cars remain, perfectly preserved in the continuous relenting heat of Death Valley, one of the hottest known places on earth with ground temperatures reaching such soaringly high levels that some area’s have no life at all, not even bacteria. The next nearest life to Darwin is over 100 miles away in any direction.

car photography and car photography

Tim – “I found myself in Death Valley moving through the Valley from South to North. Death Valley has always held a fascination for me in its sheer scale and beauty. I had pulled off onto a small clearing by the side of the road to refit the power lead to my GPS that had fallen loose, pulling off the main road in Death Valley is something that signs warn you not to do as soft ground can leave you stranded and once you are in this position with the distinct possibility of not having anybody pass you on the road for the rest of the day, its a dangerous manoeuvre at best. I distinctly remember looking up from the dash and catching a glint of something far down the valley to my left, it was then that I decided to risk it and start carefully driving down the track that led in that direction. The town itself is very hard to find and it was a my second visit to Death Valley trying to locate it, laying so far off the road along a very dusty track with no signs it is a place where it is very easy to pass it without ever knowing that it ever existed, very much the town that time forgot in many ways. Darwin itself is a truly amazing place and I really didn’t know what to expect as I pulled onto the dirt track that carried me into this totally silent abandoned area in the middle of the valley. It was early evening and the sky was a golden colour as the heat haze dropped in front of me making viewing anything in the distance across the valley floor very difficult. 6 miles off the main road quite literally in the middle of absolutely nowhere I came across the town sat in the base of the mountains, abandoned and shrouded in the sheer deafening silence that you experience only in places like Death Valley, a barrier across the track warning me to stay out.

I loved shooting in Darwin with all the amazing items and homes that have literally just been left behind as they stood many years ago, the rich textures and the amazing light that you get in Death Valley made the project one thats was very inspiring for me creatively as a photographer. I believe that as a professional photographer, ‘personal work’ is something thats very important to do each year, it in many ways offers us the freedom to express ourselves more through our work than perhaps day to day commercial work can with its demands and constraints. This entire body of work in Darwin was shot on my Fuji XPro1 and a 14mm f2.8 lens, with nothing else at all, just myself and the camera to capture what I saw before me.

I think the three main things that will remain with me always from my visit there was the sheer deafening silence as the sun dropped across the valley and left me and the town in darkness, the US Army truck with the bullet hole in the windscreen parked out of sight, and noticing that every clock that I came across had stopped at 4:20 on Sunday the 13th even though they were all ‘mechanical’…”
